MARC JACOBS — The Stripe Canvas Espadrille

The espadrille has long belonged to holidays: canvas, rope and the general expectation of somewhere warmer. MARC JACOBS keeps the familiar construction largely intact, rendering the upper in broad blue-and-ivory stripes above a braided jute surround and low rubber sole.

Across the toes, however, restraint gives way to identification. Raised black leather letters divide the designer’s name between the pair—MARC on one foot, JACOBS on the other—turning a particularly traditional summer shoe into something considerably more declarative. The stripes do most of the nautical work. The shoes provide their own introduction.
