LOEFFLER RANDALL’s Loretta begins as a rather restrained brown velvet sandal and then acquires five inches of ambition. Its banded upper is rendered in dark brown silk velvet, whose crushed surface shifts between tobacco, bronze and chocolate as it catches the light.

Wide bands cross over an open toe while a slender buckled strap circles the ankle, leaving the otherwise uncomplicated upper to sit atop a substantial velvet-covered platform and block heel. A padded leather footbed softens the architecture underfoot; beneath it all, a bovine leather outsole provides the considerably more practical conclusion.

Good sense has its limits.
