Oscar de la Renta’s Crystal Gallery earrings take the familiar pear drop and enlarge it until it becomes something closer to an objet. A faceted brown crystal forms the centre of each earring, surrounded by smaller stones in warm, tonal shades and framed in antiqued gold-tone metal. The palette is unusually earthy for something so unabashedly sparkling.

Their scale does most of the work. Suspended beneath the ear, the oversized pear-shaped drops turn brown crystal into something jewel-like, almost geological—the sort of thing one might reasonably expect to find labelled in a cabinet rather than attached to an evening dress.
