ALEXANDER McQUEEN takes the rather administrative business of keeping one’s papers in order and introduces the human skeleton. Constructed in black Italian nappa leather, these zip-around portfolios turn anatomy into surface ornament: a skull emerges from the front of one design, while a ribcage travels along the spine of another. The object remains remarkably proper. Its subject matter does not.

The anatomical theme continues at the fastening, where the zipper terminates in a branded skull pull with crystal-set eyes. The Skull edition appears here in both silver- and gold-tone hardware, while the Ribcage is rendered in gold. At A5 size, each is proportioned as an agenda, document case or portfolio—an unusually practical container for a recurring McQueen vocabulary of mortality, anatomy and ornament. Crystal-eyed skull hardware is also well documented elsewhere in the house’s accessories.
