BRONX AND BANCO’s Rosalie does not so much print flowers onto a dress as attach an entire garden to it. Dimensional floral appliqués spread across layers of fine tulle, their petals punctuated with sequins so that the surface shifts between embroidery, embellishment and something approaching botanical relief.

A sweetheart neckline and slender adjustable straps frame the fitted, boned bodice before the flowers disperse downward across a sheer, floor-length skirt. Beneath them, an integrated bodysuit provides coverage while leaving the surrounding tulle exposed, allowing the appliqués to appear almost suspended against the body. In Powder Blue and Lavender, the effect is particularly ethereal; rendered entirely in Noir, the same garden becomes considerably less innocent. The construction remains the same. The horticulture changes its disposition.

Some gardens refuse to remain two-dimensional.
