SCHIAPARELLI Museum Collection — Dove Brooch, White

Peace, rendered slightly out of reach.

A dove emerges in luminous, milky white, its sculpted form softened almost to abstraction. Less anatomical than dreamlike, the bird appears caught somewhere between stillness and flight, while a diminutive gold-tone olive branch provides the only interruption to its otherwise immaculate surface.

The dove and olive branch—longstanding emblems of peace, renewal and promise—are rendered here through a distinctly surrealist vocabulary. Its high-gloss whiteness suggests both purity and blankness: an empty surface upon which all manner of hopes might be projected.

Part jewel, part object, and perhaps less a bird than an idea made visible.
